Jackets, Oilers talking trade
9:08
AM ETColumbus Blue Jackets Top Email The Columbus Blue Jackets and Edmonton Oilers might soon make a trade, as they've been scouting each other heavily the past few days.
Blue Jackets are interested in Oilers D Tom Gilbert, The Fourth Period reports, but there's no word on whether Edmonton will part with him. Meanwhile, the Oilers want a top-six forward.
We know the Jackets are dealing Raffi Torres and Fredrik Modin, both of whom have expiring contracts. Also, they may part with Kristian Huselius, too. The Oilers have plenty of guys they want to ship, as well, so this deal might involved a few more pieces by the time it's done. The Oilers will be happy to take on the Jackets' expiring deals as they try to rebuild.

here was the souce of espn's rumor..thefourthperiod story
Could the two teams sitting at the bottom of the Western Conference find a way to help each other before the Mar. 3 trade deadline?
It appears they're trying.
According to sources, the Edmonton Oilers and Columbus Blue Jackets have been scouting each other lately and are involved in trade discussions.
The Blue Jackets had a scout attending last night's Oilers game in Anaheim, while Oilers director of pro scout Morey Gare was in Columbus yesterday.
It's believed the Blue Jackets are interested in Oilers defenseman Tom Gilbert, though it's uncertain if Edmonton is willing to move him. The Oilers, meanwhile, are looking to acquire a top-six forward.
Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson, who used to work for the Oilers prior to joining Columbus, has indicated that he won't part with R.J. Umberger, though the team may be willing to deal Kristian Huselius.

I really like Gilbert's game. He certainly is having a down year, but who isn't on the Oilers. Truth be told, as bad as they are, a minus 12 isn't all that bad. I think he's another option to run point on the power play and gives us the flexibility to let Jurcina walk, if that's what Howson wants.

from eric smith @ hockeybuzz........
The Edmonton Journal reports that the Blue Jackets are interested in defenseman Tom Gilbert. The Blue Jackets have been scouting the Oilers and the Oilers were in town for the Sharks game to take a look at the Columbus squad. Gilbert is a reliable defenseman that has played all 82 games the last 2 seasons. He showed he could score in the 07/08 season with 13 goals but don't expect that kind of production going forward. He does have a right handed shot.
If this trade is to take place, my guess is that a defenseman will go the other way. The Blue Jackets have 6 d-men signed at least through next year and Anton Stralman and Mathieu Roy are restricted free agents who most likely will be signed. Also, with the play of Milan Jurcina, he will get a long look by GM Scott Howson as he will become a UFA at the end of the year. Not much room to add another defenseman unless another is going the other way. My guess would be Marc Methot. No inside information but just an educated guess. He hasn't had the year that he had last year and the Oilers would get a defenseman that is signed through next year at just over $1 million. Methot will be a RFA after that and the Oilers would then have options. We will see how this unfolds.

from hockeybuzz....edmonton blogger richard cloutier.....
- Lots of talk about Tom Gilbert and Denis Grebeshkov being dealt ahead of Sheldon Souray. Don’t believe it. For starters, Gilbert has a reasonable contract and his play has improved as the season has continued. Grebeshkov is an RFA, and he is still thought of as being a player with tremendous potential, even though he is having a tough year. Souray, aside from publicly declaring his willingness to go in a trade, is a defenseman with size that does have some successful seasons from the past on his resume. While not all teams are going to line-up to acquire Sheldon, he is going to return better than a second-round pick when he is dealt. The Oilers will get a decent player for him. You watch.
- Oilers apparently are scouting the Columbus Blue Jackets right now, and considering the history between Columbus GM Scott Howson and the Oilers, favorable conditions for a trade exists. Gilbert was mentioned as a possible target in a trade, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the Jackets, who have salary cap room, would consider a move to acquire Shawn Horcoff. It’s impossible to know what Horc’s value is in a trade, but some teams aren't as negative about him as Oiler fans think

I'd love to be in that locker room when Avery makes his first smartass comment about Shelly's wife. He'll have to take his sloppy seconds through a straw.
