The Blue Jackets have hired former Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Rangers GM Craig Patrick to serve as senior advisor in the hockey operations department. It's a position the Blue Jackets have been trying to fill for more than a year, and with this hired they've landed a hockey lifer, a member of a legendary hockey family.

Patrick, the grandson of Lester Patrick, was assistant coach to Herb Brooks on the 1980 U.S. team that won gold in Lake Placid, the Miracle On Ice. He spent 17 years (1989-2006) as GM of the Penguins, including the drafting of Sidney Crosby, but was fired after the 2005-06 season.

The Blue Jackets have been woefully thin at the executive level, compared with other NHL clubs. Patrick brings a wealth of experience, having served as a director of hockey operations, coach, general manager and scout during nearly 40 years in the game.

awesome hockey move here ... very pleased with this ... aside from the other mountain of credentials ... there are 3 things that make me giggle about what this man has done ...

he drafted Jagr , Fluery , and Crosby

so yea ... good enough for me

and yes to answer ahead i feel our coach's days are numbered ... he might make it through the end of the season ... but after that i give him about 5% chance to remain our guy

Sounds like he had some good moves over the years, but had some really bad moves in his last few years in Pittsburgh.  So this could be good or bad.  So I will keep my opinions in check for a while.

About the only thing I will say that is positive now is that he knows hockey.  And now we finally have someone with true knowledge of the game, high up in the front office.

Great move, our draft hasn't been great considering we have had good picks in almost every draft.
