Really??

What did Howson do that was so rotten?

He traded away high priced UFA when would have gotten nothing in return. The playoffs were a question mark at best this year and to let them walk with not signing them or getting a return would have angered me more.

He tried to pull Richards out of Tampa it doesnt make sense to trade away Leclaire or Mason. Dallas had better options for Tampa then we did.

Also, you guys seem to blame Howson for the make up of our team when it seems the only thing bright in the make up of our team is the guys that Howson brought in.

Hedja, Novo, Peca are all pluses. Its to early to tell on Dicky T. Brule is much improved as of late. And Zherdev and Nash are leaps and bounds over last year.

I would have much rather this been done then give up the complete future to bring in a guy like Hossa for a shot at the Playoffs.

And for you guys questioning the Foote move. If he was such a leader maybe he could have taken 500,000 less. But instead of playing out the year here he asked to get moved to Colorado? (sounds like such a great leader) Yes, thats right when I deal couldnt be done your great leader asked to be moved.
Howson did what he could with what he had. We werent making the playoffs with or without Richards. And in the end, thats what matters, we lost 2 players with bloated salaries for 17 games of the tail end of another playoffless season. Would you really have rather seen Foote stay til the end of the season only to hit the market with no return to us? Or Feds? Cause this season is lost as it is, and I and prepared to have a big summer with lots of trades with our shiny new 1st round picks.

First Welcome to Blue Jackets 24/7!

I see what you're saying but like I posted in another thread I think Howson and the organization had to show the fans they were going for it this year.  It's the closest we've ever gotten and the fans needed a bone.

I get what Howson is doing, I'm and Indians fan and Shapiro did the same thing.  The difference is the Indians fans pissed and moaned because they were spoiled for 7 years prior.  Jackets fans have never experienced success and needed at least a faint glimmer of it this year, IMO.

I think this was a mistake. Mainly because I think most fans are going to be pissed and their revenue is going to suffer now and into next year.

And once a deal wasn't reached with Foote Howson asked him to waive his no trade. Foote wanted to stay put.

I'm with Prestonn99...I'm ok with what went down yesterday - I think Howson did the right thing.

The Richards deal falling through was upsetting (at least I was pretty bummed).  Tampa was pretty clear about it - they wanted a goalie.  I think offering up Pazzy or Mason would have been a catastrophic mistake.  No way were they going to take Norenna back.

It's sad that Ruth is the best we can get for Sergei, but to be perfectly honest I would have been pissed if Sergei was still a Blue Jacket today.  No way were we going to resign him - so at least we got something for him.

I was hoping Adam would stick around - but I won't lie and say I haven't doubted his true dedication to the team for a while now.  His actions yesterday showed his true colors IMO.  If he *really* wanted to be here and really believed in what we are working towards he would have taken the pay cut.

I don't disagree that the fans deserve something to be really excited about, but I don't think a futile run in these last few games would have been the best long term solution, especially if it meant losing a big chunk of our future talent.  Now we've got lots of money we can spend and can agressively target free agents in the offseason.

ok im finally over my anger issues and am somewhat happy with what Howson did

except Ted Ruth, he sucks

and maybe going for vaclav prospal would've been good. he went for our old prospect, Picard, who before trade deadline day I honesty believed he was still in the Jackets organization, oops.

but meh I no longer say **** Scott Howson or Fire Scott Howson

LOL CanadianJacketsFan!  I think we were all expecting different things on Tuesday.

Maybe Ted Ruth will turn into something - shame it's going to be years before we know...if we ever get to find out.

These are just more examples of how uninformed Blue Jacket fans are about good GM moves. I guess after 7 years of Doug McClain snake oil, these folks don't know the first thing about good hockey management. Scott Howson is the best thing that has happened in Columbus since Rick Nash or Ken Hitchcock. Howson would have been crazy to give up Pascal for Richards and that is what it would have taken. Good move by Scott on this one even though he would have given almost anyone else for Richards. Sergi was a goner for a basket of peaches but we got a prospect. You can bet that no one else in the league was willing to give anything for Sergi. Sergi is a professional and a HOFamer but he was over the hill when McClain got ripped off for him 2 years ago. We just gave up a shut down defenseman (Beuchemin) and 12 million to get him at the pace of $400,000. per goal. Howson finally got us out of this mess and can now spend the money where it can help us. Adam Foote never really bought into leading this team. He was all about money when he bailed on Colorodo and he is all about money as he bails on the Blue Jackets. Howson bent over backwards to appease Foote but in the end he bailed for money again. Foote will not come close to getting what the CBJ offered him and we will get a much better (quicker and younger and more dedicated)  defenseman for the money. This will turn out to be another good Scott Howson move. Every guy he has brought in on a tight budget this year has been an asset and his draft was great. Give this guy until the beginning of next season and the case will be made for even the jerks who are still learning about hockey and who make inflamatory posts such as this one.

First Welcome to the site.

Good post, many great points.  I can see you didn't like his post.  But we allow for passionate exchanges as long as you don't insult other posters.  There are a lot of people still learning Hockey in Columbus, although I believe CanadianJacketsFan knows his hockey, he was just frustrated and admitted so later in this thread.

Everything feels better now but the shock of the moment made a lot of fans upset.  I agree that we shouldn't have given up Pascal and Howson's moves do look better now.

Howson inherited a mess and he's doing a good job of cleaning it up.

Scott Howson did some good things this week!!! I love the jackets and along with everyone else i am VERY excited to be in the playoff race. I expected things to go a little differently on trade deadline day, and i was disappointed when i saw the moves. Not pissed at Howson, because i understand teh moves, but diasppointed. The more i think about what went down, the less upset i am about the moves. They were the right thing to do given the situation and Howson did what he had to do.
The playoffs were still within reach and they still are... think about what we really lost, Fedorov was having an unproductive, injury prone season. I respect him as a player and have always liked the guy, but he can take his 9 goals and go to Washington... I wish him luck. It suck to lose teh leadership of Foote, but he was not out top defenseman or anything, at least in my opinion. Howson's choices were either lose these guys now, and get a little something (a first round pick at least, who knows what will come of Ruth) or lose them in 18 games for absolutely nothing. Howson got involved in the Richards talk, which was exciting, but the Lightning was just looking for too much. I don't know about everyone else, but i would not have wanted to give up LeClaire OR Mason to get Richards, and that is what the Lighning was going for, a solid goalie. The deal didn't work out so he moved in another direction.
This team is headed in the right direction WITHOUT A DOUBT!!! We have gotten better and better the past few years and we are loaded with young talent. In ANY discusssion around the NHL about teams with young talent who will make some waves in the very near future... the jackets will be mentioned. The fans need to be positive and see that this team will be very good very soon. I get so sick of going to games and hearing people sitting all around me just trashing the team the entire time. Let's root for these young guys and see if they can get us to the playoffs... and if not, next year is not too far away!!!!
GO JACKETS and good job to Scott Howson!!!

Again I'll say that I no longer agree with my Tuesday February 26th self. Howson did the right thing with getting rid of Feds for sure, but the Foote move, to me, was a little hazy. Is it any coincidence that in 1 game w/o Foote Jackets 3rd ranked PP has dropped to 5th? Maybe not the most skilled defenceman due to age Footer still served as a leadership figure and an all-star shot blocker.

I'm looking forward to see what Howson does in the offseason. The entire year we've been looking for a first line center. There are a few players that I'd like to see fill that void: Olli Jokinen, Brandon Dubinksky, Chris Higgins, Ryan Kesler.

Only one of these players is a true top line center but the other three are some of my favorite young stars and given the opportunity they could rise to the occasion.

Also I want Howson to rid the team of Steady Freddy Norrena. I'm sure there will be doubters, sometimes including myself, but he's going on 35 yrs and he will no longer match the NHL goaltender standards.

Thoughts?

I will be forever thankful to Freddy for what he did for us last year.  That trade for Denis was an incredible one - which we clearly got the better end of.

That being said, I agree that this should be the last year for Freddy No.  Hopefully Mason will come join the big club next year - I can't wait to see him.  I think Freddy could continue with another team as a back up, but with Pazzy kicking major ass, and Mason tearing things up in juniors, I am hoping between the two of them we'll be set in goal for a long time to come.

It may be time for Steady freddy to move on to another backup job, but not because of lack of production... just due to what he has coming up behind him. Norrena has been a VERY solid backup and if you look at the goalie stats, and take out all the the starters in the NHL, Freddy is in the top 3 or 4 in everything! He is , statwise, one of the best backup goalies in the whole league. He did a great job for us. He is definitely no Pazzy, but to have a guy like Freddy to step in when you need to give Pazzy a night off for any reason... you will still be in the game.
It is time for Mason to come up and play behind LeClaire and maybe we can get a little something for steady freddy, but i will always appreciate the way he played in Columbus. There are a lot of people who bitch and moan about the way he plays and are disappointed when they see him get the start, but on the "backup" standards... he is about as good as they get!

I know Norrena is an amazing backup. Going into the year I liked him more than Pazzy but those 4 shutouts in 6 games made it hard for me to keep my view. Norrenas style is more of a high percentage, get in front of the puck and always stay square and it works.

I don't think it would hurt the Jackets to keep him but I'm sure other teams will review his stats and consider using him for a season or two.
